Split Horizon is an optically printed 16mm impressionistic handmade film. Using found  home movies and travel films from the 1960’s, I respond to the material through collage, painting, and abstraction directly onto film, aiming to create a psychological traversal across a vast unknown. Landscape acts as a basis for exploration, and characters emerge and descend, representing the self or the other. The onscreen horizon is often literally split; the characters and places become a mirror for one another, meditating on our own ability to contain multiple versions of self, identity, and internal narratives about our own stories, paths and histories. (9:42 duration, 2025, 4:3, digitized 16mm film)

Split Horizon premieres at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA on May 17th, 2025 as part of the MassArt MFA Film program’s student thesis film screenings along with two other student films at 11:30 AM.

Split Horizon will also be shown as a small CRT installation in the 2025 MFA thesis show at the MassArt SoWa gallery. This show runs from April 22nd- May25th and the opening reception is on May 2nd from 5pm-9pm. Click here for more info.

The Past is Right Behind Me is a sculptural expanded cinema installation featuring a digitized 16mm handmade film and looping analog sound. It is an examination of the idea that history is always repeating itself, that the past lurks closely to the present, sometimes violently erupting into the now. How far have we come? How does it feel to go backwards into the future? Can we transform the parts of ourselves history has altered?

It will be shown one night only on May 9th, 2025 at MassArt from 5-8pm in room D309 (on the third floor of the DMC building).

Strange Horizons is an impressionistic travel film about traversing the unknown. Using home movies on 16mm from the 1960's, the artist responds to the material through collage, painting and abstraction directly onto film. It is a meditation on chaos, self reflection, and the urge to escape.

Strange Horizon is screening at the Brattle on December 9th, 2024 as part of the Grrl Haus Best of 2024 Fest. It was awarded “Best Experimental Short”.

Broken Amulet

September 10th-18th, 2024

Broken Amulet is a 16MM handmade optically printed film and reel-to-reel sound installation by MassArt Film & Video MFA candidate Lauren Marie Dake.

This project explores the notion of lowering one’s defenses and allowing an internal “magic” to surface. This title is mostly informed by my process: I allowed this work to come to life joyously and intuitively—to spill out, without any feelings of self consciousness or images of a final product in mind.

Guided by the vivid colors of now-extinct Kodachrome film, warped low fidelity music, and the nostalgic and idyllic imagery of 1960’s home movies, this installation intends to perform the sensation of everyday magic encountered even after the dissolution of childhood fantasies.

Special thanks to Adam Savje for allowing me to explore the optical printer over the summer and experiment freely.
